The former Zamoskvoretsky electric substation for urban railways was built in 1909-1910 according to the design of architect M. N. Gleyning. Today it serves the Apakov tram depot, the tram line on Shabolovka, and trolleybus routes around Kaluzhskaya Square.

The elegant building is located on the territory of the pre-revolutionary Zamoskvoretsky tram park, which was renamed in 1923 in honor of revolutionary P. L. Apakov. The park was built as part of the third phase (1908-1909) of the development of the Moscow electric tram network and was completed on July 22 (August 4) 1909. A modern complex appeared on a site of 2.25 hectares between Mytnaya and Shabolovka streets. The heating system of the car shed was developed by the outstanding engineer V. G. Shukhov.

City authorities, interested in the development of the electric tram, attracted talented architects to create aesthetically significant tram parks. The project of the Zamoskvoretsky park substation was developed by architect M. N. Gleyning, who also participated in the design of the Miussky tram depot. Despite its utilitarian purpose, the substation building featured exquisite proportions and a carefully crafted facade in the neoclassical style. Frame technologies allowed for large window openings, improved lighting of the interior spaces, and efficient use of space freed from massive partitions.

Electricity for the Zamoskvoretsky tram park was supplied from the Central Electric Station of the Moscow Urban Railways, built on Bolotnaya Embankment in 1907 to supply the tram network. The main fuel was anthracite, delivered from the Presnensky warehouse by freight trams. Two services were responsible for electricity supply: the current production service, which managed the central station and eight substations, including Zamoskvoretsky, and the current distribution service, which monitored the overhead cable networks.

In 2004, the substation and the Apakov depot were under threat: there were plans to relocate the complex and build residential buildings in its place. However, in 2011, the order of the Moscow Government was canceled. In the winter of 2017, restoration of the historical buildings of the depot was permitted. Currently, cosmetic repairs of the facades of the substation have been completed.
