Former Nakhichevan Theater Building

Фото 1
Among the architectural landmarks of Rostov stands the building originally constructed for the Nakhichevan Theater, now home to the Rostov Youth Theater. Its design was created by the renowned architect Nikolai Nikitich Durbach.

The construction of the theater began at the initiative of members of the Nakhichevan Society of Lovers of Dramatic Art and lasted four years and two months. The opening took place on December 16, 1899, but the interior finishing was only completed in 1907.

The architecture of the building is a blend of baroque, renaissance, and classicism. It features a complex layout: a triangular pediment with crenellations around the perimeter supported by four Corinthian columns, and a cartouche located in the tympanum of the pediment. The semi-circular windows on both floors and the arched lintels above the second-floor windows give the building a special charm. The frieze is adorned with floral motifs, side risalits, semi-columns, and stucco work. The central loggia is enclosed by a balustrade of balusters, while the first floor is rusticated. The theater foyer, curtain, and decorations were painted by artist I. I. Krylov. The auditorium features excellent acoustics due to an ancient construction method, with amphorae embedded in the ceiling with open mouths. The hall accommodates 650-700 people and has the shape of a drawn-in semicircle, bringing the audience closer to the stage. The floor of the hall could be leveled using jacks, allowing for balls and other events to be held. As a result of the reconstruction that began in 1983, the area of the building more than doubled, with the addition of production workshops, dressing rooms, and small and experimental stages.

The first performance was presented by the troupe of Nikolai Nikolaevich Sinelnikov, which included a prologue-allegory and the comedy by L.N. Tolstoy "The Fruits of Enlightenment" in four acts.

Over more than 110 years, many theater troupes have worked in this building. Since 2001, the theater has been named the Rostov Regional Academic Youth Theater and continues the traditions of its predecessors. The building has been included in the list of cultural heritage sites of regional significance.
