Only a few Russian families practice Orthodoxy. In 2009, the Diocese of Burundi and Rwanda was established.

The first Orthodox church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, appeared in Burundi in the 1960s. Currently, there are two functioning Orthodox churches in the country: the Uspensky Cathedral in Bujumbura, where Hieromonk Vasily (Bonane) serves, and the church of St. Arsenius of Cappadocia at the missionary center in Gagara, where Priest Silvester Sahiuguvu serves. Construction is also underway for a third church as part of the missionary center in honor of the Great Martyr Demetrius in Karama.

On October 11, 2009, at the Monastery of St. Savva in Alexandria, Archimandrite Savva was ordained as a bishop, becoming the first Orthodox bishop of Burundi and Rwanda.
