Old Tram Depot

In Saratov, the system of route public transport has existed for over 120 years. In 1887, the horse-drawn tram arrived in the city. On Astrakhanskaya Street, between Moskovskaya and Bolshaya Kazachya, three stables, car sheds, a granary, cellars, and forges were established, everything necessary for servicing the tram.

In 1907, the tram was transferred to the Belgian Society of Saratov Electric Trams and Lighting, known as the "Reciprocal Tram Company." A plan for tram lines was approved, and infrastructure construction began.

The new divisions required fundamentally new premises. In the same 1907, the construction of a complex of tram depot and power station buildings began, which continued until 1912. The architect was Yuri Nikolayevich Terlikov. The complex was designed with elements of Art Nouveau, characteristic of his other works, such as the treasury building and a mansion on Proviyantskaya. This style was popular in Europe, so the old depots in European cities resemble ours.

The power station and trams began functioning in 1908. The station, with a capacity of 3200 horsepower, generated direct current, sufficient not only for the trams but also for lighting the tracks and streets. Electricity was also sold and supplied to homes.

Interestingly, two wooden houses remaining from the original complex have stood on the central street of the city for over 100 years. They now house residential apartments.

In 1918, after the well-known events, the tram and power station were nationalized. World War I, the revolution, and the civil war severely undermined the economy. In 1921, a fire occurred at the power station, and significant efforts were required for restoration.

In 1926, the power station was overhauled and remained the main source of electricity for the city until the commissioning of SarGRES. That same year, the construction of tram depot No. 1 began, which lasted for 9 years. Before this, the tram depot on Bolshaya Kazachya was the only one in the city. After the new depot was built, the area began to be used as repair workshops.

On November 6, 1952, on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the revolution, trolleybus service was launched in the city. However, the trolleybus depot was only built in 1960; before that, trolleybuses were housed in a car garage on the territory of the repair workshops.

With the advent of trolleybuses, the management became tram and trolleybus, abbreviated as TTU. In the second half of the 20th century, this place was referred to as the TTU repair workshops or TTU base. Now it is more commonly referred to as the MUP SGET base. Here, repair trams, a traction substation, and the administration of SaratovGorElectroTrans are still located.
