The Pokrov Church in Novgorod Kremlin

Фото 1
The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is located in the western part of the Kremlin, next to the eastern facade of the Kremlin wall and the Pokrov Tower.

The first mention of it in chronicles dates back to 1305, when the posadnik Semyon Klimovich built a stone church at the gates from Pruzhskaya Street, meaning the church was a gate church and attached to a wooden tower. In 1389, by the order of posadnik Grigory Yakunovich, the old church was dismantled, and a new temple was erected in its place. At the end of the 16th century, the Church of the Intercession was rebuilt, as the ancient masonry of the monument dates back to this time.

In 1692-1693, the Church of the Intercession was reconstructed: new drums were added, windows were cut, and a two-story southern annex was built according to the design of architect Semyon Yefimov. From this time, the church became one of the main ones in the Kremlin and the house church of Novgorod voivodes.

At the end of the 18th century, the Pokrov Tower was turned into a prison, and the church became a prison temple. It is likely that a passage from the church to the tower was arranged then. In 1832, the temple was assigned to the Church of Flora and Lavra on the Sofia side. In the 1860s, the tower and church were adapted for the provincial archive, and in 1889, for a charitable institution. The southern chapel of the church was called the chapel of the Nativity of John the Baptist, and the northern, the chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Before the Great Patriotic War, a three-span bell tower adjoined the church from the southeast, which has not survived. The monument suffered greatly during the war: the dome, roof, and part of the masonry were lost.

The church belongs to the type of pillarless, single-apsidal, single-domed temples. The square base is surrounded on the south and north by chapels, and on the west, by the refectory and narthex. The central cubic part of the church supports an octagon, which is crowned with an octagonal drum with a dome. Two annexes, which are continuations of the chapels, adjoin the refectory from the south and north. Also, from the south, a two-story annex extends parallel to the Kremlin wall. The facades are modestly decorated; the octagon has flat pilasters at the corners, connected by straight ledges, between which large rectangular windows are located.

The temple is a monument of architecture from two eras: the 16th century and the late 17th, 19th centuries. The church belongs to the type "octagon on a square" and is one of the few surviving churches of this type in Veliky Novgorod.
