Monument to Astronomer Fyodor Semyonov in Kursk

Fourteen years after the scientist's death, grateful residents of Kursk erected a gravestone in his honor at the Moscow (Nikit) cemetery. The monument is an octagonal column made of black marble, topped with a bowl symbolizing the fullness of life lived, and an Orthodox cross. The bowl is adorned with a ribbon featuring Zodiac signs. The monument is inscribed on three sides with writings and a poem by P.A. Ustimovich, the former mayor of the city. The fence consists of 16 brick pillars, between which are installed metal pipes and 10 iron wreaths.

The unveiling of the monument was a solemn event attended by clergy, city officials, and residents. Astronomer Savich traveled from Moscow for the ceremony. Fyodor Alekseevich Semyonov, a talented astronomer and esteemed citizen of Kursk, was given the honors he deserved.

The appearance of the monument to Fyodor Semyonov has changed several times: the metal top has been altered, and the cross on the sphere was of a different shape. According to drawings and photographs from the 19th century, the monument had a classic look, suitable for installation not only in a cemetery. Later, elements of a gravestone were added, although Semyonov was buried in another part of the Nikit cemetery, which is now lost. The location of the monument at the intersection of two main alleys also indicates its secular nature, suggesting the idea of creating a memory alley.

The idea of restoring the monument has been discussed for a long time, and relevant requests have been made to the city administration. In 2011, the Year of Russian Cosmonautics, the monument to the famous Kursk resident, the first honorary citizen of the city Fyodor Semyonov, an astronomer, mathematician, meteorologist, optician, and mechanic, was restored. The head of the administration, Nikolai Ovcharov, emphasized the importance of remembering great fellow countrymen at the unveiling and announced plans to continue restoring the alley where the graves of Semyonov and other notable Kursk residents are located.
