In 1999, the Rostov Kremlin received from the state the mansion of the Kekin merchants, who owned it from the 1830s until the revolution. This marked the beginning of the history of the Merchant Museum.

The building was constructed, expanded, and renovated from the late 18th to the early 20th century. After nationalization in 1917, it housed an Agricultural Technical School.

The mansion transferred to the museum needed repairs and restoration, for which the Ministry of Culture allocated funds. The work lasted eight years. During this time, the scientific council of the institution developed the museum's concept, prepared thematic plans, and exhibitions. The museum opened on August 29, 2008, on the 125th anniversary of the Rostov Kremlin.

The museum features a permanent exhibition titled "Kekins. Family, Fate, Heritage," introducing visitors to the history of the city's merchants and the origins of families from this class. The exhibits, selected with love and knowledge, show how trade was conducted and social life unfolded in those times, as well as the spiritual life of the merchants. In the Kekin house, in the grand hallway, engravings and plans of Rostov from the 19th century, photographs, and portraits of famous merchants are displayed. In the owner's study, one can see exhibits reflecting the charitable activities of Alexei Leontyevich Kekin and learn about his will.

Museum staff actively engage in educational work, organizing various forms of tours, including theatrical ones. Evenings dedicated to the old house are held, featuring an antique piano, and ending with tea parties with homemade pastries, just as it was in merchant times.

Alexei Leontyevich Kekin was not only a merchant but also a patron who did much for the city. With his funds, a linen factory was built to provide jobs for local residents. He also contributed to the restoration of the crumbling Kremlin and the development of water supply networks in the city. Kekin bequeathed his fortune to his hometown with the condition of building a gymnasium, which was constructed and still operates today. Many cities envied Rostov for having such an educational institution.
