Museum of Kolomna Mead in Kolomna

Фото 1
The city of Kolomna has long been known for its traditions of beekeeping and mead-making. The non-profit organization "Kolomyanka" has taken on the task of restoring these ancient customs by opening a museum called "Secrets of Kolomna Mead." The museum is located in the wing of a 19th-century merchant house that belonged to the merchant and philanthropist Semyon Vasilyevich Makeev. This historical building has preserved wine cellars that have been restored by the museum's organizers. They recreated the atmosphere of that era and opened the cellars to visitors.

In Russia, mead cellars were called the storage places for honey and where honey-based alcoholic beverages were left to mature. Such cellars were found in almost every noble and merchant household.

In the cellar, guests are greeted by a keykeeper, a beekeeper, and a mead maker, who share stories about the history of beekeeping in Kolomna, ancient Russian rituals, mentions of honey in ancient chronicles and epics, as well as how to brew mead according to the "Domostroy."

Visitors, under the guidance of the mead maker, can prepare honey sbiten using an old Russian recipe and taste various types of honey. The museum also features a shop called "Golden Hive," where a variety of honey-based products can be purchased, including gingerbread, syrups, sbiten, balms, and even natural honey wines.
