In the 1930s, a local history museum was established in Mozhga, featuring sections dedicated to history, archaeology, paleontology, and ethnography. The museum's archive holds a historical document titled "Socialist Mozhga," created by the museum director Valentin Ivanovich Zuev in 1935. On January 9, 1936, an article about the establishment of the local history museum in Mozhga appeared in the newspaper "Izhevskaya Pravda," and this date is considered the official founding day.

During the Great Patriotic War, the museum was run by the renowned teacher Vera Vasilievna Tolstaya. However, after 1946, the museum's funds and collections were lost, and it ceased operations for many years. It was only in 1975, on the 50th anniversary of Mozhga, that the executive committee of the city council of people's deputies decided to reopen the local history museum, led by Nikolai Ivanovich Maximov on a voluntary basis.

Since November 22, 2011, the museum has received a new status and name: Municipal Budgetary Institution of Culture "Historical and Local History Museum" of Mozhga.

Today, the museum serves as a cultural center for Udmurtia, hosting various scientific and historical events. It is a place where residents and guests of the city enjoy visiting. The museum features collections dedicated to the history, art, and nature of the region. Active clubs for different age groups operate here: "Local Historian," "Azves," "Artist," the City Society of Historians and Archivists, "Young Museum Worker," "Origins," "Nature of the Region," and "Udmurt Language." Participants in these clubs contribute to the preservation of historical and cultural heritage and serve the noble cause of maintaining historical memory.
