Until 1819, the monastery was called "Ryazan Pustynsky Pokrovsky Girls' Monastery" and was known to the people as Agrafeninskaya Pustyn. It was located near Lake Kutskoe, not far from Ryazan.

On June 18, 1819, the monastery was moved to Chyornaya Gora in the eastern part of the city of Mikhailov, and in May 1820, the cells were also transferred there. The cemetery church of the Resurrection of Christ was handed over to the monastery. In 1919, the Soviet authorities closed the monastery, confiscated and plundered its property, and sealed the churches. Soon, a unit of Red Army soldiers was stationed on the monastery grounds, and a pig farm was established there a few years later. By the end of the 1950s, all the buildings of the monastery had been completely demolished. In 1998, the residents of Mikhailov built a chapel in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "The Seeking of the Lost."

The church was consecrated by Metropolitan Simon Novikov of Ryazan and Kasimov on October 10, 1999. On October 6, 1999, the Holy Synod blessed the reopening of the Pokrovsky Women's Monastery to revive monastic life. On May 27, 2001, the Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos was consecrated.

On July 2, 2005, Archbishop Pavel Ponomaryov of Ryazan and Kasimov laid the foundation stone for the restored cathedral with the main altar in honor of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos.

On September 11, 2007, with the blessing of Archbishop Pavel of Ryazan and Kasimov, the foundation stone was laid for the gate church in honor of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian.

The monastery has a Sunday school and a library. There is also a small farm with poultry and livestock. A refectory is provided for pilgrims, but there is no separate hotel, and the residential building can accommodate a maximum of 12-15 people.

Currently, restoration work continues at the monastery: the cathedral is being recreated, the monastery fence is being completed, and a garden is being laid out.
