Saratov, located on the banks of the Volga, transformed into one of the leading centers of the milling industry in Russia during the 18th and 19th centuries. The city became known for its flour produced in mills owned by the Schmidt brothers. They were the true "flour kings" of Saratov, and their products were in demand not only in Russia but also beyond its borders. This is evidenced by prestigious international awards received at the World Industrial Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and in Stockholm in 1897.

By 1883, the Schmidt brothers had acquired two mills known as the Big and Small Mills. Their entrepreneurial activities began with windmills, which already had an extensive clientele in the districts. Their reputation as honest and hardworking entrepreneurs, along with the high quality and timeliness of their orders, contributed to their success. This allowed the brothers to expand and modernize production. The architectural structures of the mills, as well as the warehouses for grain and flour, were created under the guidance of the famous Saratov architect Alexei Markovich Salko. These buildings became recognized masterpieces of ancient industrial architecture.

The Small Mill, located at 90 Chernyshevsky Street, still retains its grandeur today. Its walls, made of red fire-resistant bricks, according to specialists, can last another five centuries. The architecture of the mills is characterized by ingenuity and romanticism. Towers and turrets, crenellated parapets, spires, and grilles create a unique appearance that distinguishes these buildings among the urban landscape.

Today, "Schmidt's Mill" has transformed into a unique business quarter, where ancient buildings are carefully preserved and harmoniously complemented by modern elements.
