Russian literature has long been recognized as a world classic and is considered one of the most expressive in the world. However, a special place in it is occupied by the poet Ivan Semyonovich Barkov, known for his erotic 'shameful odes,' filled with obscene language. Barkov himself was not a stranger to wild behavior, similar to the heroes of his works. Many literary scholars believe that his fables should not be perceived as pornography, but rather as a satire on the poetry of the late 18th century.

Ivan Barkov was born in 1732 in a priest's family. He entered the Academic University of St. Petersburg and showed good results in his studies, but his behavior left much to be desired: he loved to drink, was fond of women, defied his teachers, and often skipped classes. In 1751, he was expelled from the university. Nevertheless, Barkov found his calling, becoming a secretary to Mikhail Lomonosov, where his poetic talent emerged. His works featured simple peasant women, lewd priests, and prim nobles. In his fables, he mocked human vices with subtle sarcasm and irony.

For obvious reasons, we cannot quote some of his poems, so we will limit ourselves to a brief retelling. In the 'shameful odes,' the heroes use their genitals as instruments of incredible power, a lustful mademoiselle teaches men the art of pleasing women, and priests dream of intimacy with young parishioners. Barkov's poems were never published but circulated in manuscripts in huge numbers. His fables evoked laughter and even received high praise from Alexander Pushkin.

It was later written about Barkov that there is no sharp temptation in his works, but rather a reflection of normal nature and a wild, yet healthy, life. He was a foul-mouthed individual unlike any other in literature, but reducing his work to mere filth would be a mistake. Barkov possessed self-irony; it is said that before his death he remarked, 'I lived sinfully and died amusingly.' According to rumors, he died in a brothel, and the reasons for his death are quite obvious.
