Chinese Cuisine

Фото 1
Chinese Cuisine is a small cross-shaped pavilion. It is a one-story building with a mezzanine topped by a wide dome.

The history of Chinese Cuisine begins in the 1760s-1770s when A. Rinaldi was working on the ensemble of the Private Dacha. He planned to build stone pavilions on both sides of the pond in front of the southern facade of the Chinese Palace: the Freylinskii on the east and the Coffee Pavilion on the west. However, only the Freylinskii pavilion was constructed in the early 1760s.

This one-story building is in the Baroque style with elements of Classicism. The central part of the building noticeably protruded towards the pond and was topped with a dome-shaped roof.

In 1852-1853, architect L. L. Bronshteidt reconstructed the Freylinskii house, which became known as Chinese Cuisine.

Chinese Cuisine is a stylized building characteristic of the second half of the 19th century, where a restaurant is now located.

Since the late 18th century, the building has been repeatedly reconstructed and used as a kitchen, hospital, stable, as well as a court and cavalier corps. Its appearance and interiors changed over time.

This architectural monument from the mid-19th century is an example of utilitarian construction in the style of historicism. The building was constructed during the reconstruction of the Chinese Palace, initiated by Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. The kitchen, previously located in the Cavalier Corps, now had seven utility rooms: a confectionery, a 'tablecloth' room, a 'serving' room, a 'coffee' room, and others. The second floor housed staff quarters. The building also had an icehouse and a wine cellar. To this day, the chimney stack with numerous flue openings has been preserved.
