The church is located in an open field, some distance from residential houses, on the site of an old cemetery, of which no traces remain. The church was built in 1665 and is a typical example of wooden architecture, "an octagon on a square base." A refectory, built later, adjoins the square base on the western side. This rectangular structure has a gable roof. The refectory expanded the space for a large number of people, served as a place for discussing rural matters, and hosting festive meals. Services could also be held there, for which a small altar with an iconostasis was arranged. In the refectory of St. John Chrysostom, a dome rises over the southern slope of the roof, indicating a second altar. Next to the church stands a hexagonal bell tower with a tent-like top from the 18th century.

Entrance to the church is through a small narthex, from which a low door leads into the spacious refectory. The ceiling boards rest on a powerful transverse beam, the matitsa, supported by two massive carved columns. The columns are decorated with carvings of three melons separated by twisted bands.

Inside the church, the transition from the square base to the octagon and then to the tent is hidden by a painted ceiling, which has been preserved better than in other wooden churches of Kargopol. Two carved supporting columns have also survived, while only fragments remain of the iconostasis.

The "heavens" or "sky" is the ceiling structure in the shape of a gently truncated pyramid, characteristic of the wooden architecture of churches in the Russian North. The central ring usually depicts Christ, while the sector boards represent icons of angels or saints.

The Church of St. John Chrysostom is currently inactive and is a historical site managed by the Kargopol Historical and Architectural Museum. To visit the church, it is necessary to contact the museum in advance and arrange a time with the keykeeper. Guided tours can also be ordered.
