The monastery was founded near the place where the ancient Jericho road crossed the Kutili stream and was located in the village of Faran. It was situated in a gorge, on both banks of the stream, in caves and grottos.

A few years after the monastery's founding, Saint Chariton left the Faran Monastery and went to the Fekoysky gorges, where he founded a new Sukki Monastery on the slope of a high mountain. However, before his death, he returned to the Faran Monastery, where he was buried.

The period of the monastery's flourishing came in the 6th century. In the 6th and 7th centuries, the monk Cosmas the Eunuch lived in the monastery, whose life story was included in the "Limonar," an hagiographic work by the Greek monk John Moschus.

In the 8th century, the monastery still existed: its name is mentioned in church chronicles and letters from bishops and abbots. In the early 9th century, due to infighting among the children of Harun al-Rashid, the monks left the monastery.

In the 19th century, the monastery was abandoned and completely destroyed.

In the second half of the 19th century, Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), head of the Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem, made several unsuccessful attempts to acquire the monastery for the Russian Empire. This was only achieved in 1903 by Hieroschemamonk Panteleimon, the abbot of the Russian Monastery of the Elevation of the Holy Cross on Mount Athos.

A few years later, a fire destroyed almost all the buildings, and they could only be partially restored. The restored hermitage was a two-story building with many cells at the foot of a cliff, where at a height of about 20 meters is a cave church in honor of Saint Chariton.

The last Athonite inhabitant of the hermitage, Father Gerasim, passed away in the 1960s. After that, the hermitage was deserted, except for a few days when members of the Russian Spiritual Mission of the ROCOR visited it, as well as on September 28, the day of Saint Chariton, when the clergy of the Mission served the Divine Liturgy there.

Since 1997 and up to the present (2020), monk Chariton has been living permanently in the hermitage, having single-handedly restored it from the ruins left after the Six-Day War.
