Church of the Meeting of the Lord in Ostrozhka

Фото 1
The first wooden church was built in 1623-1624. Among the priests who served there were Fathers Vsevolod, Nikolai, Vladimir, and Konstantin. They lived in houses near the church, and some of these buildings are now being transferred to the church. In one of them, the residents of Ostrozhka built a chapel.

Father Konstantin was known for his powerful voice and strong build. When he sang, the candles in the church would extinguish from his voice.

The church was located on an earthen hill, which, as told by the 100-year-old Nikolai Fedorovich Shilov from Kasyanovo, was created by the efforts of hundreds of peasants from Ostrozhka. Shilov and his brother Fyodor, who owned a two-story house that still stands near the road, were dispossessed in the 1930s. Nikolai Fedorovich's son, Arkadiy Shilov, was sentenced to execution in the Far East on political charges. The Soviet authorities also persecuted some priests of the Ostrozhka Meeting Church. Surrounding the church was a beautiful cast-iron fence, and to the north was a garden. At the cliff's edge was a holy spring with a cross, a lamp, and an icon. The water from the spring was considered healing, but after the intervention of atheists, the spring disappeared.

Nearby, priests and local nobility were buried. Their graves had monuments in the form of snow-white angels, which were also destroyed.

The Bolsheviks did not dare to close the church without the people's consent. At village meetings, where thousands of peasants gathered, the majority spoke against closing the church. However, the Bolsheviks proposed to turn the church into a museum, leaving the altar and icons untouched. This proposal did not satisfy the party members.

Alexander Chepanov, who worked at the MTS, recounted that two days after the meeting, political department workers convinced the laborers to remove the icons and dismantle the iconostasis. The wives of the activists then began to wear beautiful clothes, but soon they left Ostrozhka. Korchaga, one of the activists, died under the wheels of a train.

Other participants in the events also suffered. According to N.V. Kasyanov and N.E. Kazymova, the bells were removed by residents of the village of Sosnovka, including Mikhail and Yegor Raspopov. One of the bells fell and killed Misha Raspopov. The residents of Ostrozhka cursed the destroyers of the church, and Pomazkov, who participated in the removal of the bells, soon received a death notice.

Particular difficulties arose with the large bell, which weighed hundreds of poods. It was thrown from the bell tower, and the sound of its fall was heard in neighboring villages. All seven bells were destroyed, and the main one weighed about 10 tons. It was engraved with the surname of merchant Golubev, who financed its casting. Workers from the MTS smashed the bells, receiving curses from the faithful.

The fence and gravestones were also destroyed, and the cast-iron floors in the church were torn out. Wooden floors were laid in the church, the stoves were destroyed, and a club was opened. It was managed by G.S. Medvedev, and the chairperson of the village council was Natalia Romanovna Popova.

Later, the church caught fire, but the fire was extinguished. The blame for the fire was placed on a resident of Ostrozhka, who was soon arrested. Subsequently, the building was used for storing grain and aging cheese, as well as for producing vitamin-herbal flour. After the fire in 1937, one of the priests who returned from exile was also sent to prison.
