In October 1833, it was decided at a general meeting to build a new stone church on the site of the old one and to consecrate it in honor of John the Baptist, as a miraculous icon was located at the cemetery. However, the funds collected from the households were insufficient. Therefore, in March 1838, Bishop John of Nizhny Novgorod was informed that the peasants of the village of Bogomolovo in the Balakhna district expressed a desire to repair the existing wooden church, which was over three hundred years old: to replace the rotten logs, to sheath the building with planks, to lay a stone foundation, to arrange a warm chapel in the refectory in the name of Saint John the Baptist, and to install a dome that had not previously existed.

According to the rules of that time, such large-scale work required the supervision of a professional architect. Therefore, architect Anisimov from the Provincial Office was sent to Bogomolovo. He reported that he had taken the plan of the church with its facades in the existing form and added a new dome at the request of the parishioners.

The reconstruction of the church took quite a long time. Only at the end of 1839 were the chapels in honor of the Prophet Elijah and John the Baptist consecrated in the refectory. The main altar was consecrated only in November 1841.

In the mid-19th century, the list of populated places in the Russian Empire indicated that the cemetery of Bogomolovo was located by the river Pustokha. It had one Orthodox church, four residential yards, where six men and five women lived.

Thus, the small but recognized spiritual center of Bogomolovo entered the 20th century, a century of social upheavals, revolutions, and radical transformations that disrupted the centuries-old foundations of life in the Russian hinterland, as it was at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the village of Bogomolovo.
