Boris Vasilievich Zvorikin, born in 1872, left a significant mark in the field of book illustration, becoming one of the founders of the 'Russian style.' He received his education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and also attended classes at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. His creative path began with work for major Russian publishers, such as I.D. Sytin and A.I. Mamontov, where he created illustrations and designed books, allowing him to gain recognition in artistic circles.

In 1921, after leaving Soviet Russia, Zvorikin settled in Paris, where he continued his work at the 'Piazza' publishing house, led by Louis Fricatel. During this period, he translated into French and illustrated Russian folk tales, such as 'The Snow Maiden,' 'Vasilisa the Beautiful,' 'Marya Morevna,' and 'The Firebird.' These works, designed in the form of stylized handwritten text, became true masterpieces, but during the artist's lifetime, they could not be published.

Zvorikin's life in Paris was not easy, especially during World War II. He passed away in early 1942 in the German-occupied city, leaving behind a rich legacy that awaited its time to be appreciated. Half a century after his death, in 1978, an album of his illustrations was accidentally discovered by Andreas Braun, the owner of the Gotham Book Mart. He presented this manuscript to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, known for her love of art and literature. At that time, she was working as an editor at Viking Press in New York.

Jacqueline, the wife of John F. Kennedy and former First Lady of the United States, played an important role in the cultural life of the country, and her interest in art contributed to the publication of these tales in 1978 as a colorful children's book in English. The publication became a significant event in the literary world, opening up to the Western reader the beauty of Russian fairy tales and Zvorikin's unique style.
