The Kожиных Estate

Фото 1
In the mid-18th century, the estate passed from the princes Sonsovy-Zasekin to the ancient noble family of Kожиных, known since the 14th century. In the 1760s, the new owners began reconstruction, during which a new main house was built based on the old chambers, completed by 1812. At that time, symmetrical two-story wings with transitions to the ends of the main house appeared, forming a ceremonial courtyard.

During the French occupation of Moscow, this area became a site for the execution of citizens suspected of arson by the Napoleonic administration. Researchers believe that the first public execution of 18 Moscow arsonists occurred here, in the side part of the estate, almost at the apse of the neighboring church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Shubino.

Later, in 1873, the wings were raised and expanded, but the appearance of the main house changed little. By that time, the Kожиных no longer lived here. The main house housed the "Germany" hotel, where in the late 1830s, the Decembrist I.A. Fonvizin lived under police supervision. In the 1870s, the estate hosted the lithography of the artist Makovsky. Ten years later, the editorial office of the "Chess Magazine" was located here, along with the "Crimean Bazaar" store selling seafood and delicacies, as well as the "Rus" store, which sold embroidered towels, lace, and folk crafts. The architect K.A. Dulin lived in the house, who before the revolution was engaged in the construction of apartment buildings, and after designed a sanatorium in the Solovetsky camp and structures for the Grozny-Tuapse oil pipeline.
