Sudaq Fortress of the Genoese

Фото 1
One of the architectural monuments of Crimea is the Sudaq Fortress, built by the Genoese in the Middle Ages. Its construction began in the 14th century and continued until the 16th century, including new expansions of the defensive structures. The fortress is located on a high coral reef, at an altitude of 157 meters above sea level of the Black Sea. Thanks to its advantageous location, it long protected the coast from Ottoman invasions. The fortress had many towers, the tallest of which was the Watchtower. The name of this tower, like others, changed with each new consul. The garrison of the fortress was small, but could be increased if necessary. In peacetime, the guard consisted of up to eighty warriors, which allowed them to timely warn the other soldiers and delay the enemy.

The Sudaq Fortress entered history not only due to its preservation but also through the memories of contemporaries. Among the famous guests of the fortress was the renowned merchant and navigator Marco Polo, who lived from 1254 to 1324. After the capture by the Ottomans, the fortress suffered greatly and ceased to be used for its intended purpose. Over time, the defensive structures deteriorated and fell into ruin, and only in the late 19th century was it decided to grant the fortress museum status. The famous researcher and engineer Alexander Berthier-Delagard began restoration work, which helped preserve the fortress.

Today, the fortress is popular among researchers and tourists, and historical films are often shot here, with the number exceeding ten. Annual knight tournaments are held at the fortress, and more than two thousand medieval exhibits are displayed. This unique historical site is located on the Crimean Peninsula.
