The term "gopnik" originates from the name "City Society of Guardianship" or "City Hostel of the Proletariat," abbreviated as GOP. This society emerged in the late 19th century and was located in the building of the current "Oktyabrskaya" hotel on Ligovsky Prospect in St. Petersburg. The GOP was a place where homeless children and teenagers involved in theft and hooliganism were brought for re-education. After the October Revolution of 1917, a State Hostel of the Proletariat was established in the same building. Soon, the word "gopniks" appeared among the residents of St. Petersburg, referring to the inhabitants of this hostel on Ligovka. In Petrograd, and later in Leningrad, uncultured people were often asked: "Do you live on Ligovka?" Over time, gopniks came to refer to young criminals across the country. The term "GOP-STOP" became associated with robberies committed by residents of the GOP.
