In the autumn of 1740, two packet boats, "Saint Paul" and "Saint Peter," set sail from Okhotsk to the eastern coast of Kamchatka. In the area of Avachinskaya Bay, it was decided to make a stop for wintering. On October 17, the ships entered the harbor, which Vitus Bering named in honor of the expedition ships, the harbor of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul. Here, the settlement of Petropavlovskaya Harbor was founded, marking the beginning of the history of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the capital of Kamchatka.

Until recently, there was no monument to the holy Apostles in the city. The city hall decided to rectify this by commissioning sculptor Sergey Mikhailovich Isakov to develop a composition. The model of the monument was displayed at the Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker for public viewing. Various locations were considered for the installation of the monument, and ultimately, the shore of Avachinskaya Bay, surrounded by picturesque mountains and a marine landscape, was chosen.

The solemn opening of the monument to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, patrons of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, took place on October 16, 2005, as part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Orthodoxy in Kamchatka. On the same day, the monument was consecrated.
