Фото 1
In Rostov-on-Don, the Khatranov mansion has been preserved, built in the 1890s according to the design of engineer Arsen Oganesovich Ter-Akopov. Today, this building is a monument of history and culture of regional significance.

One of the owners of the mansion was P.E. Khatranov, the mayor of Nakhichevan-on-Don and a hereditary honorary citizen. He came from a wealthy Armenian family. In the first half of the 19th century, his relative, merchant Pogos Arutyunovich Khatranyan, traded in Russia, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Another representative of the family, Kevork Khatranyan, was an entrepreneur who built a brick factory in Nakhichevan. The letter 'K' has been preserved on the front door of the mansion, symbolizing the owner's surname.

The mansion is a one-and-a-half-story plastered brick house, executed in the traditions of old Nakhichevan. The facade of the building is asymmetrical, with the main entrance on the left. The windows have triangular and semicircular lintels, while the lower floor is rusticated. The outer windows of the facade are adorned with half-columns of the Doric order. The four-pitched roof is equipped with dormer windows, and the facade is painted in three colors with white decorative elements.

Inside the building, a marble staircase leads to the second floor, and the ceilings of the rooms are decorated with ornamental patterns. The corridor on the second floor is surrounded by living rooms with original decor. The large hall has windows facing I-ya Sovietskaya Street and features a stage and a balcony for musicians, separated by partitions. Balls, home performances, and concerts were once held here. The grand hall is decorated with wooden decor, and the interior doors have carved overlays.

In the early 1910s, the Khatranovs sold the mansion to Gavriil Vasilyevich Mazaev. At that time, the house was worth about 17,500 rubles, while the Mazaev family's fortune was estimated in millions. Ivan Gavrilovich Mazaev, the head of the family, was a prosperous Molokan peasant exiled to the village of Novovasilievka for renouncing Orthodoxy. He later moved to the settlement of Bolshaya Krepkaya, where he engaged in sheep farming and bred a breed of merino sheep known as 'Mazaevskaya.'

During the Soviet era, the building was confiscated. During World War II, it housed the Gestapo, and after being liberated by the Soviet Army, it became a hospital. After the war, the building was used by military agencies: the housing and operational department, and since 1980, it has housed the center for state sanitary and epidemiological supervision of the military district.
