Dmitry Nikolaevich was born in the Osurovo estate, located near Pereslavl-Zalessky, and his childhood and youth were spent in this city.

In 1915, Kardovsky inherited the estate with a garden and a house built in 1885 from a relative.

The estate is situated on a hill at the entrance to the city from the direction of Moscow, near the Goritsky Monastery.

In the neighboring house lived their close friend, Ivan Alekseevich Zhdanov, a teacher at the local women's gymnasium and the Pereslavl Spiritual School, who held the title of collegiate assessor. In 1915, his nephew, A.A. Zhdanov, stayed here.

In 1918, the Kardovskys moved here from revolutionary Petrograd and lived until 1922, after which they went to Moscow. During this period, in 1918 and 1919, the newly established Pereslavl Museum was housed in the estate, which Dmitry Nikolaevich also helped organize.

With the onset of the war, the Kardovskys settled again in Pereslavl, where D.N. Kardovsky passed away in 1943.

In 1954, the artist's daughter, Ekaterina Kardovskaya, donated the estate to the republican Union of Artists. A small hotel and a dining hall for artists and sculptors visiting Pereslavl were later built next to the historic house. This complex is now called the "D.N. Kardovsky Creative House."
