From the pre-revolutionary Bazaar Square on Moskovskaya Street, only the Meat Passage remains, a magnificent example of stone architecture from the Russian Empire. This building was constructed in 1897 according to the design of the Penza architect Veniamin Semechkin. The construction of this majestic structure cost 25 thousand rubles, part of which the City Duma borrowed from banks at high interest. However, the expenses were justified. The Sursky architect created a charming building in the Russian style. According to Semechkin's design, the Meat Passage was meant to rise above Bazaar Square like an impregnable fortress. The effect of a formidable citadel was created by small arrow-slit windows and towers at the corners. National color was complemented by patterns of brickwork and pointed roofs. The architect took care not only of the building's exterior but also of its functionality for future merchants. Inside, special cellars with icehouses were arranged for storing meat. Today, when the building no longer serves its original function, all the cellars are filled with earth. Compared to modern high-rises, the passage no longer seems so tall. Meat was traded here for 80 years, until 1977, when a special building was constructed for this purpose on Bakunina Street. Soon after, the Meat Passage was recognized as an architectural monument and placed under protection.
