The monument on Mount Sokoliha was erected in 1993 in honor of the Ice Battle of 1242, when Russian troops led by Alexander Nevsky defeated the German knights of the Livonian Order on the ice of Lake Chud. Historians assert that it was here that the path taken by the warriors to the decisive battle lay.

The monument was created by sculptor I.I. Kozlovsky and architect P.S. Butenko. Alexander Nevsky is depicted on horseback surrounded by knights, as if defending the city. His figure is visible from afar, even when approaching Pskov.

Every year, the Day of Military Glory of Russia is celebrated on Mount Sokoliha. Historical reenactment clubs recreate events from the past, and hundreds of spectators watch as Russian warriors, reminiscent of the times of the Ice Battle, defeat the Livonian knights.
