Mikhail Mefodievich Katkov was born on September 8, 1860, in St. Petersburg, in a family that respected science and education. From an early age, he showed an interest in legal sciences, which predetermined his future career. As a gifted student, Katkov enrolled in one of the leading universities in Russia, where he studied Roman law in depth, which at that time was considered the foundation of legal education in Europe.

After successfully completing his studies, Mikhail Mefodievich began his teaching career and soon became a professor at Kyiv University. Here, he earned the respect of colleagues and students due to his deep understanding of Roman law and his ability to clearly and accessibly explain complex legal concepts. His lectures attracted the attention of not only students but also other professors who came to listen to his presentations.

However, political instability and revolutionary events in early 20th century Russia forced many scholars to leave their homeland. Mikhail Mefodievich was among them. After emigrating, he went to Europe, where he continued his scientific and teaching activities. One of the most important stages of his life was his work in Prague, where he became one of the founders of the Russian Faculty of Law. This faculty became a kind of center for Russian emigrants seeking to continue their education and scientific work outside of Russia.

In Prague, Katkov not only taught but also actively participated in creating curricula that combined both traditional approaches to studying law and the latest achievements in legal science. Thanks to his efforts, the faculty became known as one of the best in Europe, attracting students from various countries.

Mikhail Mefodievich Katkov lived a long and fruitful life, leaving a significant legacy in the field of Roman law and education. He passed away on June 22, 1941, leaving behind many students and followers who continued his work. His contribution to the development of legal science and education remains an important chapter in the history of Russian emigration and global legal thought.
