Church of All Saints at Vologda Cemetery

Фото 1
Before the revolution, in the Vologda cemetery, in addition to the Church of All Saints, there were two other churches: in honor of the Beheading of John the Baptist and in the name of Simeon the God-receiver, built in the late 18th century. The Church of All Saints was erected with funds from several merchant families and was designed in the style of late classicism, characteristic of the first half of the 19th century. The bell tower was created after the model of the bell tower of the Solovetsky Monastery. However, later extensions disrupted the original architectural harmony.

During the Soviet period, the Church of All Saints was closed and used as a warehouse. Before the Great Patriotic War, it housed a transit point mentioned in A. I. Solzhenitsyn's book "The Gulag Archipelago." It describes a tragic incident when the eight-tiered bunks collapsed under the weight of prisoners, leading to the death of many people buried at the Vologda cemetery.

After the war, in 1946, the Church of All Saints was returned to the believers and has not been closed since. The first rector after the restoration was Archimandrite Seraphim (Shinkarev), who headed the parish council and oversaw the reconstruction. By November 1, 1946, initial restoration work was completed: an altar and a sacrificial table were installed, window openings and frames were made, a temporary iconostasis was set up, stoves were built, and icons were hung. Revered icons of the Mother of God of Tikhvin, the Joy of All Who Sorrow, and the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker were returned from the Ilyinsky Cathedral, and they are still in the church today. The iconostasis initially consisted of small icons donated by the residents of Arkhangelsk, and they are still here. The bell tower was restored to its original form in 2008.

The Church of All Saints has a Sunday school for the children of parishioners, where they study the Law of God and prepare festive concerts. In 2008, a separate building was constructed for the school.
