Hotel 'Astoria' (Residence of White Generals)

Фото 1
One of the most historically interesting buildings is the former Hotel 'Astoria', built in 1905 on the order of the wealthy Rostov merchant of the first guild, Pyotr Vasilyevich Khakhladze. During the Civil War, notable Russian military leaders and figures of the White movement stayed here, such as General Lavr Georgievich Kornilov, General Mikhail Vasilyevich Alekseev, Lieutenant General Anton Ivanovich Denikin, Lieutenant General Alexander Sergeevich Lukomsky, and other prominent personalities. The hotel is frequently mentioned in the memoirs of not only White generals but also other Russian émigrés, making it a significant place where important questions about the fate of Russia were resolved.

Today, the former hotel building is located at Budennovsky 22/46, previously known as Taganrogsky Avenue. Built in the Art Nouveau style by civil engineer Sergey Popilin, the building belonged to Pyotr Vasilyevich Khakhladze, a first guild merchant and director of the 'Pyotr Khakhladze' Partnership. He was also a board member of the Rostov-Don Tobacco Factory Partnership. Khakhladze, coming from a poor family, became one of the wealthiest people in the city through hard work and a successful marriage to a landowner's daughter.

However, it is worth noting that Khakhladze only owned the building known as Khakhladze's trading house, while the hotel itself was owned and managed by Martiros Sarkisov.

The hotel was considered one of the most prestigious and popular in the city. In 1920, a fire occurred in the building, damaging the ceilings and partially destroying the facade. After that, the building was restored, but without the upper floors and with the loss of a significant part of the decor. Soon, it was confiscated by the Soviet authorities and remained in a neglected state for a long time.

Currently, the former income house of Khakhladze, where the Hotel 'Astoria' was once located, houses a shoe store, and the building itself is included in the list of cultural heritage sites of regional significance.
