Electric Aircraft: Alexander Lodygin's Failed Project

Russian engineer Alexander Nikolayevich Lodygin was the author of many unique inventions, such as the induction furnace, a new incandescent lamp, an electric heater, and a diving apparatus. However, like many scientists, he had projects that were never realized. One such project was the electric aircraft. The idea of creating an aircraft with an electric motor came to Lodygin in the late 1860s, long before the Wright brothers invented the airplane.

Externally, the electric aircraft resembled an elongated cylinder with a cone at the front and a hemisphere at the back. It was equipped with two propellers, and power was supplied through wires from batteries. According to Lodygin's calculations, the machine had a power of 300 horsepower and could take off vertically like a helicopter. He submitted his project for consideration to the engineering department of the Ministry of War, suggesting it be used for aerial reconnaissance. However, officials responded that there were no funds for testing.

Not losing hope, Lodygin turned to the French, who were at war with the Germans at the time and showed interest in his invention, allocating 50,000 francs for its development. Before leaving for France, he gave an interview to the 'People's Craft Newspaper,' where he spoke about his inventions and plans. The journalist noted that Russian inventors often have to seek recognition abroad.

In France, Lodygin improved the electric aircraft by adding lights and developing a hatch for bombing. However, he was unable to realize the project: in 1871, the Germans began their offensive, and Paris fell. Lodygin had to return home, leaving the project unfinished. Nevertheless, his ideas anticipated the emergence of the helicopter.
