Church of the Meeting of the Lord in Baturino

Фото 1
The wooden church at this site was known since the 18th century. In 1811, at a meeting of the parishioners of the Itantsin volost, it was decided to build a stone temple in Baturino, as the old wooden church had fallen into disrepair. The construction was mainly funded by parishioners and voluntary donors. The laying of the temple took place in the summer of 1813, and in September 1829, the lower warm church in the name of the Meeting of the Lord was consecrated. In August 1836, the upper church in the name of Saint Great Martyr George the Victorious was consecrated. At that time, the Baturin volost included 12 villages. The church was built according to a typical design characteristic of the Transbaikal churches of that time, as it was difficult to invite an architect to such a remote location. Despite this, the exterior of the church is unique. The builders made many changes to the design of the building according to their skills, the availability of materials, and their own vision of beauty. The splendor of 'Siberian Baroque' is hardly felt. The characteristic semi-domes, semicircular finishes of the facades, multi-faceted drums and domes above them, as well as the bell tower spire rising over thirty meters high, are visible. The external decor of the church is simplified: paired pilasters, simple frames, flat cartouches above the windows of the first tier, dentate cornices, and several pilasters with quadrifoliate crosses resembling a blossoming flower. The color scheme is also simple: whitewashed walls and emerald roofs. Such conciseness gives the building an expressive monumentality.

The composition of the church is typical for many Transbaikal churches of that time: several volumes are united along one axis, among which stands out a tall three-tiered temple with a large altar apse and an octagonal bell tower. A similar solution can be found in the Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral of the Embassy Monastery, the Spassky Cathedral in Selenginsk, the Odigitrievsky Cathedral in Verkhneudinsk, the Mother of God-Kazan Church in Tvorogovo, and the Christ-Birth Church in Chitkana. This design allows for the unification of two churches in one volume: the upper, summer church, and the lower, winter church, with the entrance to the warm church passing through the lower tier of the bell tower, creating a kind of porch that prevents cold air from entering. This type of church has taken root in Transbaikalia with its harsh climate. The combination of building volumes looks harmonious. The bell tower is a vertical dominant, but thanks to its narrow spire, smaller width compared to the temple, and large sound windows of the upper tier, it does not overwhelm but appears proportionate to the other parts of the building. The site for the church was chosen considering the village's location on the Barguzin tract and the picturesque surroundings of high mountains framing the valley. The large and elegant Meeting Church became the compositional dominant of the valley and is visible from all points of the settlement.

During the Soviet era, the church was turned into a club, and then abandoned and lost its narthex. During the restoration conducted in 1999 by the project and creative workshop 'Altar', the lost parts of the building were restored, a watchman's hut was rebuilt, and a fence was constructed based on the previous one. In 1999, the altar of the lower warm church was consecrated, where a three-tiered carved wooden iconostasis was installed, and later carved analogs appeared. Especially revered icons of the Meeting of the Lord and the image of the Unmade Savior were moved to the main space of the church in front of the solea. In early 2000, Bishop Eustathius was appointed to the Chita-Transbaikal diocese. Thanks to his efforts and prayers, monastic life is being revived in Transbaikalia. A new women's monastery has emerged around the Meeting Church in Baturino, which did not exist here before. The Meeting Church has acquired relics: a particle of the relics of Varlaam Chikoisky in the altar and a particle of the relics of Saint Great Martyr Eustathius of Plakida. Restoration work continues in the upper summer church dedicated to the Great Martyr and Victorious George.
