According to the account of Nikolai Motovilov, heard from Father Seraphim himself, the Blessed One, after leaving his cell on November 25, 1825, headed to the Far Desert. At the Bogoslovsky spring, the Mother of God appeared to him with the apostles Peter and John the Theologian. The Mother of God struck the ground with her staff, and a fountain of bright water gushed forth. At this place, Blessed Seraphim dug a well, and through his prayers, the Mother of God promised to endow the waters of the spring with healing power.
This conversation took place at Father Seraphim's "pazhinka" in the Near Desert at the end of November 1831, shortly after he healed Motovilov. The Blessed One allowed Motovilov to feel the gracious actions of the Holy Spirit: dazzling light, warmth, otherworldly fragrance, and peace in his soul. "Thank the Lord God for His mercy," he said to Motovilov, "you saw that I did not cross myself, but only prayed mentally, and the Lord fulfilled the request of the poor Seraphim." At the end of the conversation, Father Seraphim promised Motovilov that the Lord would help him remember this, so that through him this knowledge would become accessible to the whole world.
At the edge of the mountain, a small hut without windows and doors was built for the ascetic, which could be entered by crawling under the wall. The modern church resembles this first structure in the Near Desert. Many pilgrims flocked to the spring of Blessed Seraphim, and miraculous healings occurred. The royal family visited here in 1903, and a year later, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna gave birth to an heir. In 1903, a chapel and bathing area were built over the spring, but during the Soviet era, all of this was destroyed, and the spring was concreted over. The Sarovka River was dammed, creating the "Borovoe" pond.
In 1991, members of the historical association "Sarov Desert" began searching for this holy place. As a result of excavations, they found the site of the chapel and bathing area. The building did not survive, but the foundations and lower rooms remained intact. Steps paved with tiles led to these rooms, and the floor was laid with tiles featuring a beautiful pattern.
Later, a commemorative stone and cross were erected in the Near Desert, and in 2003, a chapel was built, which was then dismantled. In 2006, in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Sarov Holy Dormition Monastery, the construction of a church began at the historical site. The church was built with the addition of an altar and entrance. The filled-in bathing area is closer to the pond, and the entire territory has been transferred to the church and fenced off. The Church of the Holy Spirit was visited by Patriarch Alexy II in 2006, and on August 27, Archbishop George consecrated it.
The church houses icons painted in the workshop of Pavel Busalaev with funds from the Seraphim of Sarov Foundation. During the consecration of the church in 2006, the first icon of Blessed Seraphim with new seals was presented. A year later, the icon of Blessed Sergius of Radonezh with two new seals was brought. On June 29, 2010, Archbishop George consecrated five more icons for the church, including "The Lord Almighty," "The Prayer of the Cup," and others.
