In 1771, a fire destroyed the church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel in the village. The wooden church in honor of Archangel Michael was built between 1723 and 1770, but the exact date of its construction is unknown. Later documents, such as the parish clerical records, report the existence of two wooden churches in the village and a separate wooden bell tower. The first church was named the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, while the second, dedicated to Archistrategos Michael with an altar of the Three Holy Hierarchs, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom, was restored in 1774 after the fire of 1771. The bell tower was located next to the churches, and the cemetery was situated nearby.

By the early 19th century, it became evident that the churches were beginning to deteriorate. In 1819, the parishioners gathered and decided to build a new stone church in the name of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary with altars of Archistrategos Michael and the Three Holy Hierarchs instead of the two wooden ones, one of which was already in disrepair.

In 1841, Archpriest Vasily Sokolov reported the completion of the church's construction. However, due to a lack of funds for the finishing of the central iconostasis, services were held in the refectory, where two altars were consecrated: the first in honor of the Three Holy Hierarchs in 1829, and the second, Archistrategos Michael, in 1830. After long searches for funds for the interior finishing, the consecration of the Nativity Church took place on September 8, 1848, by Archpriest Vasily Sokolov.

In old photographs and blueprints, the church is depicted with a bell tower, which was built almost ten years after the consecration of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

For a long time, it remained a mystery why the village of Khokhloma celebrated three patronal feasts before the revolution: the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Michaelmas in honor of the Assembly of Archistrategos Michael, and the particularly revered feast of Peter and Paul. Later, a record was found about a church or altar dedicated to these apostles. It was built by the efforts of the parishioners in 1881 on the site of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church and consecrated in 1882.

Worship in the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church continued until 1937, when local authorities decided to close it. On February 24, 1938, the secretary of the Koverninsky District Executive Committee announced to the parish church council the liquidation of the church.

In 1943-1944, the church building was converted into an MTS workshop, and later it housed the repair workshops of the collective farm. In the 1980s, the church's dome collapsed, and it remained in neglect for a long time.

In 2013, a cross was erected at the site of the ruins of the stone Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, and a prayer service was held. Currently, there is a prayer house in the village where services are held regularly.
