Church of the Nativity of Christ in Gorodishchi

The church project, as local residents claim, was delivered from Samara. This is confirmed by the appearance of the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God, built between 1889 and 1895 in the village of Cherdakly, which was previously part of the Samara province. The destroyed Cherdaklin church, which existed from 1958 to 1960, had almost identical architectural solutions to the Gorodishchi church, differing only in the bell tower and some decorative elements.

The preserved archival documents about the Cherdaklin church allow us to understand the features of the Gorodishchi church.

On August 17, 1889, the Samara Spiritual Consistory permitted the construction of a stone church with five domes and a stone bell tower for 1500 seats in Cherdakly.

There are many documents about the construction of the church. One describes that the stone church is designed for 1100 people and will be heated in winter. The planned space for worshippers has a square shape with sides of 9 fathoms, to which two semi-octagonal extensions for altars adjoin from the north and south, while to the west, a rectangle serves as a porch. The porch is equipped with three doors opening outward to avoid crowding. A stone staircase with two flights leads to the bell tower, and cast-iron stairs along the walls lead to the bells. The main square of the plan is divided into a large central area, where the main dome will be, and four smaller squares with small domes. The gaps between them are filled with rectangles with arches, connecting all parts into a single space for worshippers. The four small domes will be blind, while the central dome will be open, with eight windows for lighting.

The Gorodishchi church existed for less than three decades and was closed in 1931. Old-timers recall how the baritone bell was thrown from the bell tower and smashed with a two-pood weight for melting down. Only a few people came to watch, and the fate of each participant in the destruction turned out to be unfortunate.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the church housed a grain storage for the collective farm named after the XXIV Congress of the CPSU.

Today, the church is abandoned. The massive stone building in the center of the village, surrounded by wooded hills, has a symmetrical longitudinal-axial composition. The five-domed temple has a polygonal apse adjoining from the east. The northern and southern walls have semi-octagonal projections. To the west, a rectangular narthex with two wings and a four-tiered bell tower with the main entrance adjoins the temple, consisting of two squares and two octagons. The plastic unity of the church is achieved through the compactness of the composition and the slight difference in height between the bell tower and the temple part. The volume of the temple is built in tiers. The central dome on an octagonal drum with arched windows is surrounded by side domes on octagonal drums, set on hexagonal bases with half-heads. The tiered composition is supported by dome completions of the porches on the southern and northern sides. The side entrances, designed as square volumes with dome completions, are connected to the main temple by covered galleries. This design of the porches gives the western facade of the church an effect of tiered forms, diminishing upwards.
