During the construction of the Kuibyshev Hydroelectric Power Station, it became necessary to flood the city of Stavropol-on-Volga, now known as Tolyatti, and create the Kuibyshev Reservoir in its place. Many buildings and structures were dismantled and relocated. Church buildings, such as temples and bell towers, were also subject to dismantling or explosions. The Trinity Cathedral, the main church of the city, did not escape this fate. In 1999, the Tolyatti city administration allocated a plot at the intersection of Mira and Golosova streets for the construction of a new Trinity Cathedral. In August of the same year, a parish for the future cathedral was established, and its governing bodies were elected: the parish council and the audit committee. On September 27, 1999, Archbishop Sergey of Samara and Syzran, along with the clergy of Tolyatti, conducted a water blessing service and consecrated the cross at the future construction site. On October 14, 1999, Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all Rus, while in Tolyatti, blessed the cross at the future cathedral site. To begin services, the development of the site was divided into two stages. In the first stage, a church in the name of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian was built, where services are held during the construction of the Trinity Cathedral. Upon completion, the Trinity Cathedral and the Church of John the Theologian will form the central part of the architectural ensemble. In the second stage, the main church of the Holy Trinity will be erected. The construction of the Church of John the Theologian began in the spring of 2002. On October 8, 2003, the city clergy conducted a minor consecration of the church, which was later consecrated by Archbishop Sergey. On May 10, 2013, Metropolitan Sergey consecrated the bells for the bell tower, which was built in the spring of the same year.
