Фото 1
According to the construction record on the walls of the main church, the construction of the church began on May 9, 1647, and the consecration took place on June 16, 1650, by the Rostov Metropolitan Varlaam. The church has two floors, two porches, a high basement, a tent-shaped bell tower, and a gallery. It contains four chapels: on the south side, a warm church in the name of the Protection of the Mother of God; at the northeast corner, a chapel in the name of the martyrs Guriy, Samon, and Aviv; in the altar of the main church, a chapel in the name of Varlaam of Khutyn. In the southwest tower with a high tent top is the Rizpolozhensky chapel, where a part of the Lord's Robe was kept, sent as a gift to the Elijah church by the Moscow Patriarch Joseph I and Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. During the Soviet era, it was considered lost, but in 2003 it was found in the collections of the Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve. In the basement of the church was the burial place of the church builders the Skripins and their descendants. The patrons of the construction were merchants Voniфатий and Иоанникий Скрипины from Novgorod. Before the stone church of the Skripins, there were two wooden churches here. The Church of Elijah the Prophet belongs to the traditional cathedral type: a cubic four-pillar structure with five domes on light drums. The ensemble includes the winter church of the Protection of the Mother of God, chapels, a two-tiered gallery, a bell tower, and two porches. The composition is asymmetrical and artistically balanced, with the western facade being the most expressive. The tent-shaped bell tower and the Rizpolozhensky chapel with the gallery form a linear composition. The bell tower is closer to the square of the main church than the Rizpolozhensky chapel. The chapel of Guriy, Samon, and Aviv served as the household church of the Skripins and is located at the end of the northern gallery. The warm Protection church with the refectory adjoins the central church from the south. Two large porches lead to a spacious gallery. Each facade of the church is unique, especially the western and southern ones. The decorative details give the church a picturesque appearance. The painting of the Elijah church, created from 1680 to 1717, has global significance. Inside the church and the altar are painted with wall paintings commissioned by the widow of Voniфатий Скрипин, Ulita Makaryevna. The icon painters who worked on the painting were among the best in the 17th century. The painting covers the interior with a continuous carpet of 970 narrative frames. The central dome is adorned with a symbolic Fatherland, while the small drums depict the Great Hierarch, the Mother of God of the Sign, and others. The vaults depict holidays, and the walls of the church are divided into five narrative tiers. In the altar, a liturgical scene of the Great Entrance is depicted. In the chapel of Guriy, Samon, and Aviv, the painting is dedicated to scenes from the lives and martyrdom of the titular saints. The Rizpolozhensky chapel is a masterpiece of Yaroslavl decorative art. The Protection chapel is dedicated to the theme of the Mother of God. The hand of the banner painter Fyodor Fyodorov can be discerned in the wall painting. The porch of the Elijah church includes several iconographic cycles. In the western porch, scenes from the Revelation of John the Theologian are depicted. The frescoes of the Elijah church are recognized as a monument of world significance. The iconostasis from 1650 was replaced in 1696 with a new six-tiered carved gilded one. Some icons were painted by outstanding Yaroslavl icon painters. The interior of the church features royal and patriarchal prayer places from the 17th century. In 1896, a fence was built around the church. From 1899 to 1904, restoration work was carried out with the funds of Ivan Alexandrovich Vakhromeyev. Since 1930, a museum of medieval Russian painting and architecture has been opened in the church. Since the early 2000s, services have resumed in the church.
