The church of Apostle Philip and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker on Nutnaya Street in Novgorod belongs to the Novgorod Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. The first stone church on this site was built in 1383-1384 by the posadniks Rodislav Danilovich, Ustin, and Philip.

The churches dedicated to Apostle Philip and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker were erected in 1527-1528 by Novgorod and Moscow merchants. These two parish churches stood on a common foundation. Over time, they were repeatedly rebuilt, and in 1608, the two parishes merged into one. In the 17th century, a bell tower with a tent roof was added to the churches.

In 1899, the church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker was almost completely dismantled, with only the western wall, traces on the wall of the church of Apostle Philip, and remnants of the foundations remaining.

After Khrushchev's anti-religious campaign, this church remained the only functioning one in the city. Archbishop Lev Tserpitsky recalled that during major holidays, it was difficult to pray due to the large number of people gathered.

After the Novgorod Diocese was joined to the Leningrad Diocese, Metropolitan Nikodim Rotov often came here to serve. He visited the church on the feast of the Icon of the Sign of the Mother of God, the day of Saint Nikita, and several times during Great Lent. Gradually, he began to bring foreign delegations, which caused discontent among the local authorities. Novgorod was a closed city, and the metropolitan had to make efforts to organize these trips. Over time, this became routine, and it became possible to install a new iconostasis in the ancient Russian style in the church.

In 1969-1970, measurements and studies of the monument were conducted, revealing the remnants of the walls of the Nicholas church and a restoration project was drafted. However, in Moscow, the expansion of the church was prohibited, and Metropolitan Nikodim Rotov spent almost 10 years fighting to overturn this decision.

Only after the USSR signed the Helsinki Accords in 1977 did construction work begin on the project by N. N. Kuzmina. The architectural monument was restored in the forms of the 16th century, preserving the western porch and the bell tower of the 18th century.
