The Ilyinskaya parish church in Tyumen is first mentioned in 1586 and 1587. In 1620, the rector Nikon established a women's monastic community at the church, which existed until 1765 and 1767, when it was transformed into the parish Assumption Church. During its existence, the monastery changed its name several times: Assumption, Ilyinskaya, Alexeyevskaya.

On June 21, 1773, a single-altar parish church in the name of the Old Testament Prophet Elijah was consecrated. Sixty years later, on June 3, 1833, the foundation of a new stone building in the name of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos was laid. On April 24, 1837, a two-tier stone bell tower with six bells was consecrated.

In 1884, a new Protection chapel was built on the north side of the church, and the old chapel was connected to the Ilyinskaya chapel by an arch. The construction was financed by steamboat owner Ivan Ivanovich Ignatov and parishioners. In April 1894 and November 1895, a major renovation was carried out in the church, including the reconstruction of the main dome and bell tower in the Russian-Byzantine style, the installation of a new iconostasis in the Renaissance style, the renewal of the stone floor, and the painting of the walls. On November 12, 1895, the Prophet Elijah Church was consecrated.

On January 25, 1893, a church-parish school was opened in the parish, which operated until 1918 when it was closed by the Soviet authorities.

From June to September 1925, the Tyumen residents carried out a major renovation of the church. However, on January 26, 1930, the Ilyinskaya Church was closed, the upper tiers of the bell tower were dismantled, and the crosses and domes were removed.

In 1935, the building of the former church was turned into a pawnshop, and from 1942 to 2002, it housed the Tyumen liqueur and vodka factory "Vodlikyortrest."

On March 13, 2002, the Holy Synod granted the request of Archbishop Dmitry Kapalin of Tobolsk and Tyumen to open the Ilyinskaya women's monastery in Tyumen.

In 2003, the church was returned to the faithful for the organization of the women's monastery, and the parish was established on January 20, 2003. In the same year, in July-August, the church of the "Mother of God-Christmas chapel" was renovated, and the first service took place on September 20 and 21, 2003.

On May 4, 2017, the monastery was renamed from Ilyinskaya to Mother of God-Christmas.

A non-state educational institution, the Children's Home "Pansion 'Otrada'," has been established in the monastery, serving as a shelter for orphans, a nursing home for elderly women, and a sewing workshop for youth training.

The abbess of the monastery is nun Nina Skhulukhia.
