A balaclava is not only a picturesque city in Crimea but also the name of a special headgear with openings for the eyes, nose, and mouth. This knitted accessory is known for its versatility and is used in various fields, from fishing to special forces. Nowadays, it has also become a fashionable wardrobe element, perfectly suited for windy and cold weather.

The history of the balaclava is closely linked to the city of the same name. In 1854, during the height of the Crimean War, the Russian army faced a coalition of France, England, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. Suddenly, severe frosts caught the enemy off guard. British soldiers suffered from a lack of warm clothing and food due to supply disruptions, literally freezing in their positions. It was under these conditions that the idea of a headgear covering most of the face and protecting the skin from the cold emerged.

According to one version, British soldiers already had warm hats in their uniforms that they wore under their helmets. To protect their foreheads and cheeks from the frost, they pulled the hat over their faces down to their necks, leaving slits for their eyes. It is said that this idea was proposed by James Thomas Cardigan, the commander of one of the British units. The soldiers' faces were now reliably protected from the cold and wind. The headgear was named after the city of Balaclava, where the main battles took place. It is also referred to as the 'balaclava helmet' or 'knitted helmet.'

Today, there are many variations of the balaclava hat, from classic to modern. Its primary function, just like during the Crimean War, is protection from frostbite and wind. Thus, the harsh Russian winters contributed to the creation of a universal hat model that has been relevant for over 150 years.
