The monastery was founded in 1598 as a male monastery on the Red Griva, a hill that protects it from the spring floods of the Klyazma River. Because of this, the monastery received the name Krasnogrivsky. It has never been within the city limits of Gorokhovets. In documents from 1725, its location is indicated as the village of Znamenska near Gorokhovets.

Initially, all buildings were wooden and were erected with the funds of Peter Lopukhin on the land of the Gorokhovets peasant people. In 1670, a stone church of the Nativity of the Virgin was built. In 1723, by order of Peter I, the monastery, due to the small number of brethren, was attached to the Florishcheva Desert and became its dependency. After 1733, a bell tower and a warm church of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian were added to the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin. In the 18th century, the monastery was surrounded by a stone fence with towers at the corners.

In May 1923, the dependency was liquidated, property confiscated, and the buildings were transferred to the Regional Museum, which rented them out. The monastery suffered the greatest destruction in the 1960s when the fence was demolished. On June 24, 1994, the buildings of the monastery were returned to the church, and Bishop Evlogy Smirnov of Vladimir and Suzdal transferred it to the Trinity-Nikolsky Men's Monastery as a skete.

On June 13, 1995, restoration work began, and on October 6 of the same year, the altar of the small church in honor of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian was consecrated.

On May 28, 1999, Archbishop Evlogy of Vladimir and Suzdal transformed the Znamensky skete of the Trinity-Nikolsky Men's Monastery into the Znamensky Women's Diocesan Monastery, restoring its independence.

On March 7, 2000, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church approved nun Raisa Shibeko as the abbess of the Znamensky Women's Monastery. In 2006, for her diligent service to the Church, she was elevated to the rank of igumen.

Currently, regular services are held at the monastery, conducted by Priest Feodor Zakirov. The residents manage the monastery's economy, a cattle yard and calf barn have been built, agricultural work is underway, and charitable assistance is provided to those in need.
