This small palace, located near Copenhagen, was acquired in 1907 by the sisters, the dowager empress Maria Feodorovna and Queen Alexandra of England, after the death of their father, King Christian IX of Denmark. They did this to be relatively independent when returning to their homeland and to meet, feeling like hosts rather than guests.

In one of the rooms of the palace, there was an inscription: "Ost-Vest- Hjomme bedst", which means "East-West, home is better". This house was particularly useful for Maria Feodorovna after the revolutions of 1917 in Russia when she was forced to return to Denmark. In the royal palace of Amalienborg in Copenhagen, she was allocated a building where her father had previously lived. There she spent the cold months. According to the memories of T.N. Kulikovsky, the grandson of Maria Feodorovna, who lived with her: "In the winter of 1927, 1928 we did not go to Copenhagen, as the doctors believed that Her Majesty was too weak to move. Not designed for winter conditions, 'Hvidøre' was heated with kerosene lamps. Six months later, in the fall, she passed away."
