From 1979 to 1991, the museum in Talnakh operated on a voluntary basis. The first exhibits were donated to the museum by geologists and builders, veterans of Talnakh. Among them were photographs from family archives, samples of ores and minerals, a model of the KZ-21 drilling rig, personal belongings of geologists, and other items. In 1991, the public museum was transformed into a branch of the Museum of the History of Development and Exploration of the NRP.

On May 18, 2012, after reconstruction, the Talnakh branch of the museum reopened to visitors. It features two permanent exhibitions: "Talnakh. From the First Well to New Horizons" and "Inhabitants of the Taimyr Reserves." A small hall for temporary exhibitions has also been opened, and a lecture hall is in operation.

Every year, the Talnakh branch of the museum organizes 8 to 10 new exhibitions in its halls, as well as at schools, kindergartens, institutions, and enterprises, conducts over 30 sociocultural events, and provides consulting and methodological assistance to various enterprises, organizations, and residents of the Talnakh area. On average, about 120,000 people visit the branch each year.

Today, the museum is part of one of the largest municipal associations in the country, the "Norilsk Museum."
