Holy Lake Iver Women's Monastery in Mugreevsky

Фото 1
The village is home to the Holy Lake Iver Monastery, known since 1390 as the oldest monastery in the modern Ivanovo region.

According to legend, in the early 14th century, the elder Philaret, who was considered a saint, settled here. The nearby lake also received the name Holy. Until the end of the 19th century, this area, surrounded by forests and swamps, was called Philaretovskaya. In the late 14th century, Metropolitan Cyprian visited this place, and at his behest, a wooden church of the Transfiguration of the Lord was built, marking the beginning of the male Holy Lake Spaso-Transfiguration Senegsky Monastery.

It is believed that during the Time of Troubles, the monastery was destroyed, and further mentions of it date back to the second half of the 17th century, associated with the names of the princes Pozharsky and Cherkassky. In the first half of the 18th century, the monastery gradually declined. From 1720 to 1764, 15 superiors changed here. In 1860, a decision was made to organize a women's monastery funded by benefactors. The first abbess was nun Platonida from the Vladimir Assumption Knyaginino Monastery. On the eve of the 1917 revolution, the monastery had the status of a 3rd class monastery, with three churches, two-story residential buildings for the abbess and sisters, as well as four wooden wings. Outside the enclosure were a hotel, a house for pilgrims, two houses for priests, cattle and horse yards, residential houses for the sisters, a guardhouse, a bathhouse, a barn, a mill, and a garden. The monastery housed 18 nuns and 57 novices.

After the revolution, local authorities planned to create an agricultural enterprise based on the monastery, but due to geographical conditions, this proved impossible, and the project fell apart. The monastery was isolated from other settlements and surrounded by swamps. In 1926, thanks to D. I. Kurbatov, who organized a small community, the monastery continued to function. In 1930, the monastery was closed, and the buildings were handed over to the Peat Construction. In 1938, residential buildings were occupied by workers who came for peat extraction. The church of Athanasius of Athos housed a veterinary point, the cathedral became a food warehouse with an icehouse, and the wooden church was turned into a pharmacy and the pharmacist's apartment.

The Orthodox community in Mugreevsky was re-registered in 1993, a women's monastic community formed in 1998, and in 2001, by decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the women's monastery Holy Lake Iver Monastery was established. Abbess Georgiya led the monastery and was able to resettle residents from part of the monastery buildings.

In the center of the monastery stands a cathedral in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, to the northwest of it, a church in the name of Athanasius of Athos, as well as a wooden church in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The boundaries of the complex are marked by one-story and two-story wooden buildings of cells, leaving only the western side, facing the lake, free from construction. Restoration of the churches has been carried out, the five domes of the Kazan Cathedral have been restored, and a mosaic depicting the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God has been created on its western wall.
