Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov

Vladimir Shukhov, known as the "man-factory" and the "Russian Leonardo," was an outstanding scientist, engineer, and architect. He made significant contributions to the development of the oil industry, construction, thermal engineering, shipbuilding, military, and restoration work. His designs were used for laying pipelines, constructing river tankers, erecting towers, and building factories.

Vladimir Shukhov was born in 1853 in Graivoron, Kursk Province. His mother came from a noble family, and his father was a lawyer and auditor for the Ministry of Finance. The family lived on the modest salary of the head of the household and often moved due to his father's job: first to Kursk, then to St. Petersburg.

In 1864, at the age of eleven, Vladimir entered the St. Petersburg Gymnasium, where he showed aptitude for the exact sciences, especially mathematics. Once, he proved the Pythagorean theorem by his own method, for which he received a failing grade for deviating from the accepted approach, despite the originality of his proof.

He graduated from the gymnasium in 1871 with honors. By then, Vladimir already dreamed of becoming an engineer and contributing to the development of Russia. On his father's advice, he enrolled in the Moscow Imperial Technical School, where he received a fundamental education in physics and mathematics and mastered the practical skills necessary for a practicing engineer.

In 1874, Shukhov created his first practical invention, a steam nozzle for burning liquid fuel, which made the process safer and more economical. In 1876, he graduated from the school with a gold medal. Despite offers to teach and engage in science, Shukhov chose the path of a practicing engineer, striving for invention.

That same year, he went to the USA as part of a scientific delegation, where he became acquainted with the latest technical ideas. Upon returning to St. Petersburg, Shukhov joined the design bureau of the Warsaw-Vienna Railway, but soon his life changed due to a meeting with entrepreneur Alexander Bari, who offered Shukhov to head his firm's branch in Baku.

At the Baku oil field, Shukhov faced disorganization and numerous fires. He implemented his innovations, including steam nozzles and the first pipeline for transporting oil. His main achievement was the discovery of the oil cracking process, which allowed for the production of various products, including gasoline and motor oils. He patented the first cracking installation in 1891.

In the early 1890s, Shukhov began to focus on metal structures, creating unique transparent ceilings for the Upper Trading Rows in Moscow. At the exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod, he presented a hyperboloid water tower, which was simple and inexpensive to assemble.

After the exhibition, Shukhov received numerous orders and designed hundreds of water towers, railway bridges, and new water supply projects for Moscow. He also developed designs for various buildings, including the Museum of Fine Arts and Kyiv Station.

After the 1917 revolution, Shukhov declined offers from abroad, continuing to work in the USSR. Despite difficulties, he designed the radio station tower on Shabolovka, which became an architectural masterpiece and was included in the list of cultural monuments.

Shukhov participated in the implementation of the country's electrification plan, creating designs for factories and power lines. In 1929, he received the Lenin Prize for inventing the oil cracking process and became a member of the Academy of Sciences.

The last years of Shukhov's life were overshadowed by political repression and personal tragedies. He died on February 2, 1939, and was buried at Novodevichy Cemetery.
