The Moscow River provided the city with water for a long time, but in the 18th century, with the development of the manufacturing industry, wastewater began to pollute the river, making it unsuitable for drinking. On July 28, 1779, Catherine II issued a decree for the construction of a centralized water supply in the capital. The Mytishchi water supply was established in 1804, while the largest stone bridge of that time, the Rostokinsky Aqueduct, was built earlier, in 1783-1784. Most of the water supply was laid underground, with water flowing through a brick pipe supported by wooden beams. The original plan did not include pressure structures, so five aqueducts were built to lay the water supply across valleys and ravines. The largest of these became the Rostokinsky, named after the village at the confluence of the Yauza and Goryanka rivers.
The Rostokinsky Aqueduct is a 12-arch white stone bridge over the Yauza River, supporting a channel 0.9 meters wide and 1.2 meters high, through which water flowed. The structure is 356 meters long, and the height of the abutments reaches 15 meters.
The aqueduct ceased to be used for its original purpose in the late 19th century. During the Soviet era, a heat main passed through it, and the bridge began to deteriorate, needing restoration.
From 2006 to 2008, the Rostokinsky Aqueduct was freed from the heat main, restored, received a decorative roof, and became pedestrian-friendly. A cozy park was created around it.
In 2013, the bridge and the surrounding area were transferred to the management of the PKiO "Sokolniki." The "Aqueduct" park regularly hosts festivals and celebrations, from Christmas festivities to multimedia shows.
