Alexey Dmitrievich Putyata was born on January 13, 1855, into the family of a Smolensk landowner, Dmitry Alexandrovich Putyata, who owned an estate in the village of Bessonovo in the Vyazemsky district. In 1877, he graduated with a gold medal from the philological faculty of the Moscow Lyceum of Tsarevich Nikolai, after which he studied classical literature at the universities of Jena and Berlin. Alexey was fluent in several languages, had a passion for poetry, and possessed outstanding abilities. After returning from Germany, he worked briefly in the Moscow educational district of the Ministry of Public Education.
In 1881, after submitting a petition to the emperor, Putyata transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Initially, he served as secretary of the Russian mission in Bucharest, then managed the General Consulate in Plovdiv, which was the center of an autonomous region within the Ottoman Empire. According to some sources, Alexey also served as consul in Königsberg and as a diplomatic agent in Odessa. In July 1893, he was appointed Russian consul in Melbourne, and in September, his candidacy was approved by Queen Victoria.
Alexey Dmitrievich became the first professional consul of Russia in Australia. His 'pleasant and commendable qualities' were noted by all who interacted with him during his diplomatic career. He was an aristocrat in every sense and knew how to establish good relations with local elites. Alexey Dmitrievich was an educated, charming, and interesting person with refined manners. An impeccable reputation was important to him, perhaps because his father, also an extraordinary person, was plagued by scandalous rumors throughout his life. In the noble society of that time, any misconduct could seriously damage one's reputation and career.
In 1857, Dmitry Alexandrovich Putyata purchased the Bessonovo estate at auction. Even before this, he had a passion for animal husbandry and succeeded in this field. After acquiring the estate, he focused on breeding Russian dairy cows, paying special attention to healthy and proper care. His work on improving the local breed of cattle in the Smolensk province received recognition and high praise at the First All-Russian Cattle Exhibition in 1869, which brought fame to both Putyata and his estate Bessonovo.
