The Odessa Holy Panteleimon Men's Monastery was founded in 1995 with the blessing of the Metropolitan of Odessa and Izmail Agafangel on the site of the former dependency of the Russian Holy Panteleimon Monastery from Mount Athos. This dependency appeared in Odessa in 1876, as confirmed by publications such as the guidebook by E. Fesenko from 1883. The majestic five-domed church was solemnly consecrated on December 28, 1895, by His Grace Tikhon with the participation of Hieromonk Pior and the diocesan clergy. The stone for the construction of the church was brought from the Holy Mountain of Athos.
Since then, the monastery has become an important place for Orthodox Christians seeking to visit the Holy Mountain of Athos and the ancient shrines of Palestine. Every year, more than two thousand pilgrims set out from here on their journey, receiving assistance with accommodation, meals, and document processing. After the October Revolution of 1917, the monastery, like the entire Church, experienced difficult times. In 1923, the church and the dependency were closed.
The church reopened on June 15, 1943, during the Great Patriotic War with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy I of Moscow and all Rus. Here, Theological and Pastoral courses were opened, which soon became the Odessa Spiritual Seminary. In 1946-1947, the future Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus, Igumen Pimen Izvekov, taught here. Among the faculty were future Metropolitans Sergey Petrov and Leonty Gudimov. The Odessa seminary graduated outstanding archpastors such as Metropolitan Vladimir and Metropolitan Agafangel, under whom the revival of the monastery began.
However, the post-war period was short-lived. In 1961, during the Khrushchev thaw, the church was closed again, and the seminary was transferred to the Holy Assumption Monastery of Odessa. Services in the church resumed in 1990, but the true revival of the monastery began with the arrival of Metropolitan Agafangel. In 1995, a men's monastery was established here, and on August 15 of the same year, a monastic tonsure took place. Work began on restoring monastic life.
On December 8, 1996, Metropolitan Agafangel consecrated the main altar of the monastery in honor of Saint Panteleimon and presented the monastery with a part of his relics brought from Athos. Among the relics of the monastery, the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "It is Truly Meet" is especially venerated, which was renewed during difficult times and became a manifestation for the faithful. People from all over the world come here to venerate the relics, enjoy the prayerful silence, and strengthen their faith.
In recent years, the monastery has significantly renewed itself. The facade of the church has been adorned with mosaic icons, the bell tower has been restored, and new bells have been installed. A new iconostasis in the Byzantine style has appeared in the main church, and the walls have been painted. Climbing the marble staircase, one can feel the ascent to the Holy Mountain of Athos. The monastery has been enriched with icons containing particles of the relics of saints. God's grace abides with the brotherhood of the monastery, granting them peace and spiritual joy.
