The "Memory" Museum is located in the basement of the Central Department Store, just a few steps from the main square of the city, the Square of the Fallen Fighters.

The Stalingrad Department Store, designed by architect M. P. Tsubikova, was opened on June 9, 1938. During the Battle of Stalingrad, the building was heavily damaged. After the war, it was restored according to the project of architect I. K. Beldovsky. Since August 30, 1960, according to a resolution of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, the building has been included in the list of objects of federal historical and cultural significance.

The Central Department Store became known worldwide after the headquarters of the 6th Army of the Wehrmacht, including commander Field Marshal F. Paulus, was captured here on January 31, 1943, by the soldiers of the 38th Motorized Rifle Brigade. This event inspired the creation of the "Memory" museum exhibition in the basement of the department store in 2003.

In February 2012, the basement of the Central Department Store was transferred to the management of the "Stalingrad Battle" museum-reserve. In May of the same year, on the eve of Victory Day, the "Memory" museum, now part of the museum-reserve, opened its doors to its first visitors.

Today, the "Memory" museum is a popular place for Volgograd residents and city guests. Its hallmark has become the annual reenactment of the capture of the headquarters of the 6th Army of the Wehrmacht and F. Paulus. The museum staff actively engages with youth, conducting lectures and interactive sessions for schoolchildren, college students, and university students.
