In the lower part of Sviyazhsk, near the pier, inside an artificial hill, lies one of the most unusual museums of the "Island-City of Sviyazhsk" reserve, the Museum of Archaeological Wood "Tatar Sloboda." Many organizations and hundreds of specialists worked on its creation.

There are few museums dedicated to archaeological wood in the world, and they are mostly related to wooden ships, such as the Vasa Museum in Stockholm or the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. However, there are only two museums dedicated to wooden architecture: "Berestye" in Brest, Belarus, and the Museum of Archaeological Wood in Sviyazhsk. The latter became the first and only museum of its kind in Russia.

At the confluence of the Shchuki and Sviyagi rivers, a unique cultural layer over three meters thick formed between the 16th and 18th centuries, covering an area of 5 hectares. These water-saturated deposits are referred to in archaeology as "wet cultural layers," in which items made of organic materials, such as wood, leather, bast, and wool, are preserved, which usually decay quickly. The cultural layer of Sviyazhsk seems to have preserved the city. Thanks to this "wet layer," one can see finds from the 16th to 18th centuries, which truly feels like a miracle. It is a city underground, located at the site of the 2010 archaeological excavation, where one can see what the houses looked like in each historical period.
