On January 15, 1976, a local history museum was founded in the city of Abinsk. On May 18, 1984, the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR awarded it the title of "people's". In 1999, a municipal institution was established based on it.

Today, it is a municipal budget institution of the Abinsky District, which includes departments: the Museum of the Mingrelian Cossack Village, the "Cossack Courtyard" Museum in the Erivanskaya Stanitsa, and the Abinsk Art Gallery.

The museum's exhibition is presented in four halls. The first hall contains sections dedicated to paleontology, nature and wildlife, as well as the archaeology of the Abinsky District. The museum has a significant collection of stone and flint tools from the Mesolithic era and other archaeological items.

The second hall is dedicated to the "Cossack Kuban" exhibition, which showcases items of weaponry, clothing of the Cossacks, as well as their everyday life and labor. The exhibition was created in 2009-2010 by artist A. V. Yerenenko, a member of the Union of Artists of Russia.

The third hall is titled "Defenders of the Fatherland". Its main value lies in the authentic items of weaponry and soldiers' everyday life from the Great Patriotic War, which were added to the museum's collections thanks to search expeditions in 1996 and 2009, organized by the museum staff.

The fourth hall is an exhibition space that showcases works from the Abinsk Art Gallery. The collection was gathered from plein air sessions of Kuban artists that the museum conducted from 1996 to 2009. It features works of painting, graphics, and decorative applied arts.
